So this is a jamjar, right? Let's get the low-down. Why is my character stuck here?

It is a jamjar! After an analysis of Netherworld Academy's diversity, the administration found that there was a distinct lack of one demographic: non-demons. They snapped at the opportunity to improve their school's image in the Netherworld by kidnapping non-demons (via the multiverse crossing dimensional gate) and saddling them with debt so they can't leave.

Why don't I just sneak out through the dimensional gate?

It takes a really long time to learn how to operate it. Look at that thing! It's all just a bunch of flashing unlabeled buttons! The guys whose job it is can send you where ever they're allowed to send you in the blink of an eye, sure, but those allowed places don't include anywhere outside this netherworld.

Well what if I do figure out how to use it?

Then you'd still need to know the coordinates for your own universe.

What if I'm from Stargate? Could I go home then?

Sorry, Daniel Jackson, but this is an entirely different system. You'll still be here for years.

So since this is a jamjar, my character shows up basically penniless as usual, right?

Actually, that is not true. The Prinnies were forced into taking liberties with your money and possessions (by bank robberies if necessary) and brought all your stuff to the Netherworld for you.

So can my super rich character just pay off the debt?

Nope. Super rich characters just get saddled with even more debt. But it's okay, they don't have to pay it off for a long time. Longer than their entire lifespan possibly. The contract was written for a demon, and they live thousands of years.

Speaking of money and debts and all that, how is money being kept track of?

Short answer? It's not. If your character was rich in their setting, they're rich here. Just don't go overboard with it. The Rosen Queen Shop and The Prinny Request Hideout may reference values in the nether world currency of Hel, HL for short, but it's really just for flavor. If you want a conversion, assume 100 HL is about 1 US dollar.

What about jobs to futility try to pay of the debt?

Your character can pretty much find whatever awesome, silly or demeaning job you'd like. Rule of funny applies.

Well, then what happens if a character drops?

There are a number of possibilities, perhaps they found a loophole in their contract and actually managed to escape? Or maybe they actually somehow legitimately paid off their debt. More likely they got lost in the Chaos on BS Mountain or they might have simply perished somewhere and no one bothered to revive them. In any case, regardless of what actually happened, as far as everyone on campus is most likely concerned they mysteriously disappeared.

Okay, but what if I or someone else wants to re-app them?

Considering that even death is impermanent here, that's perfectly fine! A character who went home is swindled into debt again (some people never learn). A character who got lost finds their way back and may or may not remember what transpired since they left. A character who died wakes up in the nurses office, perhaps brought there by other PCs or perhaps for more nefarious reasons.

There may be special circumstances where things need to be worked out with other players or the mods, but for the most part these are few and far between so be confidant that no one leaves the netherworld without any risk of return and re-app to your heart's content!

Okay, so what's with these demons?

Demons are evil bullies, but for the most part they're not all that bad! Being evil is cool in the Netherworld, and a lot of demons are just silly nuisances. They're a cartoony evil, like Wile E. Coyote building a death trap, or breaking up with your significant other via e-mail, then calling them to say 'Check your e-mail k thx bye.' Consider this: Ding Dong Ditch is a professional sport in the Netherworld.

They aren't all harmless; some will try to swindle you, rob you, beat your lights out... the Netherworld is a dangerous place, but if you lie low you should be alright most of the time.

How can these demons beat my character up? S/he's Goku/Superman/Dark Phoenix/The King of All Cosmos.

And if they are very powerful they will be more powerful than most demons in the Netherworld, but this is a setting where some people could destroy planets in their sleep. Somewhere in the Netherworld there is someone more powerful. More on this subject in this thread.

My character is super weak! Can they power level?

To certain degrees they could get more powerful. Plenty of humans in the Netherworld are plenty powerful, but please be reasonable. If you think you're getting a bit too far out there it never hurts to check in the with mods. But your character doesn't have to be powerful to be in the Netherworld; this isn't a game about fighting. We're still more interested in CR.

So is this or isn't this a school RP? And what kind of school is it? High school? College?

You could say it's a parody of school games, rather than a school game. As for what kind of school it is, Netherworld Academy is more of an escalator school, going from primary school to college. But regardless of age, terrible budget cuts have meant all students are in the same classes, when they are in class at all.

Is this a crack game, then? Can I play a serious character here?

The Netherworld may be wacky, but the Disgaea games blended hilarity well with serious and genuine genre subversion, introspection and character development, so we would be happy to have serious and zany characters alike. Besides, every stooge needs a straight man.

What about dead characters? How are they coming back alive to play in the RP?

Ohh, the school nurse is shockingly good at curing death. Don't worry about it. Or, if your character was at all a sinner (or simply mistaken to be, the bureaucracy is often too lazy to care about the details), they could come to the Netherworld as a prinny: an exploding slave penguin. You could shop some prinny icons together, or they could be lucky and have reincarnated in the Netherworld on a day that we were running short on prinny bodies to stuff their souls into, which really has no effect except flavor.

Yep! Netheworld Academy is a spiritual successor LJ's Netherworld RPG. We've lifted a lot of ideas and things from the game, and it's all meant as the highest form of flattery. We don't have any of the same mod staff, but we've spoken to the old founders and gotten their blessing.

P.S. Hey, what about Original Characters?

The future is now! We accept any character from whatever sick, depraved canon you can dream up-that is, as long as it complies with our rating and remains PG in the app. Oh, and we do hold OCs to slightly higher standards than other apps. A really good feel on who you are apping is a generally appropriate thing for the mods to have in this situation.

Question, as I salivate at this game in glee: Are AUs, OCs, or previous game CR allowed? I couldn't find an answer on this.

No on AUs, at least presently. We're considering opening the game to OCs at some point, but we wanted to leave that up to the player base... once we have a player base.

Regarding previous game CR, you're definitely allowed to reference it and break the 4th wall from time to time. We're fine with your character remembering previous game CR, but making references to it to other characters should require that player's permission; it's a little bit like canon puncturing.

I'd only be interested in it if I could get those other players to app here too, so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Another question! Were someone to, at some point, app Champloo, would he become a student, or would he ~~retain his staff position~~ be able to open a Home Ec classroom as an unlicensed teacher?

As for Champloo ... One does not need a license to teach. One needs only students.

One does, however, need a license to get paid by the administration.

You can petition the Dark Assembly though to actually become a teacher, which would also qualify him to be a senator if you wanted since the teaching staff, student council and the senate are a single entity in this Netherworld ~~blame the Baciel party~~

Mascots! Sidekicks! How are these handled oh great mods?

We used Plenair as an NPC because 1) we didn't really think anyone would app her, and 2) she has so little in the way of canon. She has appearances, but she basically says "..." exclusively, takes almost no actions, has no history. Even silent protagonists, like, say, Chrono from Chrono Trigger, can be looked at in terms of their actions.

So yeah, as much as we hate to lose a potential player, we've decided to reserve her as an NPC. Thanks though. ;.;

You're asking 'cause of the PreCure mascot characters who run around doling out the powers to all the girlies, right?

... does anyone ever even app them? I can't recall ever seeing them on any game's PreCure roster.

Of course. Otherwise, she might actually have to carry her own heart seed like Moonlight does, and goodness knows we can't have that.

...I've never seen anybody app them. I see them being played for shits and giggles, but...

To me this seems like something to be handled on a case to case basis.

For instance Kyuubey from Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a pretty independent entity that people sometimes app, while say, Tron Bonne's servebots are basically an extension of her character.

So here's what I say. If you include information in your app about the mascot, you can have some icons for the mascot and RP them too. If you want to have a pet journal for it (so you don't have to use icon slots on your main journal) that's fine as well.

This one is slightly more complicated since in PreCure the mascot characters are related to multiple PreCures. So if you get multiple PreCures who share the same mascot, we will want you to work out an arrangement with your cast. But we'll work with you on that.

I see the question of AUs has been answered above, but what about customizable canon characters, such as Mass Effect's Commander Shepard, Skyrim's Dovahkiin, or the Courier of New Vegas?

Hah, I specifically was talking with TK about this last night. Good thing I did.

We really don't see any harm in allowing these characters, but we might be a little harder on the apps based upon how much of a canon OC the character is.

Asking for clarification regarding the AC because I'm dumb, as it's worded now it's my understanding that to pass AC you need to make at least 1 post + 20 comments in other threads or a second post. Is that right?

It's not a dumb question~ You do need to make one post a month, but even for characters who don't talk much that shouldn't be too hard since we're all for action posts. That said, if you have one post that you've tagged 20 times? That'll clear you for activity. It doesn't have to be 20 comments in different posts, but it can be.

You could hypothetically pass activity with 5 unhackable filtered from everyone posts with your myPhone, but we might have to send the PTA (Perfectly Trained Assassins) after you then.

I hope that was clear enough! If not I can try to explain again.

Are we pretending Disgaea has game balance?

What I mean is, would "overpowered" characters have any hard caps on abilities or are they just restricted by the fact that this is a comedy game set in what is technically the afterlife and therefore no one really cares if you can hypothetically murder people with a glance?

Forgive me while I use this as an opportunity to talk about overpowered characters in more general terms. I'll give you a tl;dr just for you at the end, but I do think this is worth reading.

You have powers in this game, but it's not a game about fighting or power related pissing contests. We're here for an evil (?) lulzy time, so, no, Disgaea doesn't have game balance, and for the most part we don't intend to have it either.

But affecting characters with powers without permission is a form of god moding, and, while I do think that people should be fairly laid back about giving these permissions, those permissions are theirs to give.

But really, what's the worse that can happen? Death? Hospital cures it. Mind control? Have your character bitch about it later and we can all have a laugh.

Essentially the more powerful your character is, the more thoughtful you should be OoCly as a player.

To go all the way to the furthest end of a power scale possible, I'm not gonna say someone couldn't app God-Man, but there's a certain level of responsibility to keep in mind, and if a hard nerf had to be made, I wouldn't be afraid to do it. One thing we certainly won't accept for sure is House Of M level Scarlet Witch reality bending changing the entire game and everyone in it... except maybe as an event, and we'd have to think about it.

tl;dr : re Izanami
If you want a nerf, I'll give her one. If you want to kill people, I'd ask first, but given that death is cheap in the NW? It's not exactly a big deal.

I will say, though, that Izanami failed to kill Souji, who was still essentially a mortal man. In Disgaea, mortal men could survive this. (edit: I should clarify... some mortal men.)

P.S.
The Netherworld isn't quite the afterlife. It's where demons live. It just so happens that many human sinners come here after they die.

Oh obviously permission is needed to do anything major to a PC, that's just manners. Also I still can't figure out if Thousand Curses was an illusory attack or not, but the fact is you're as dead as you think you are, at least in fiction. Either way, it took plot powers to counter it, same as Nyx's shenanigans at the end of P3, so.

But anyway, I like to think I'm responsible OOCly and the fact of the matter is that playing her full hand like that outside of a major event would be extremely OOC for this character, so I think we're good. I'll leave notes in my app regarding anything that might be a problem.

Is the player name actually visible in characters' status screens?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: The status screen is as visible to any given character as their player wants it to be, by which I mean the character basically has no control over what other people see in their status screen, but if you wanted to play a character who couldn't see status screens (or player names) you could.

If a player actually did say they had a problem with canon puncturing ((IIRC no one has as of yet, yay)) then I would probably not overtly mention their player name ICly, but I see no reason it wouldn't be visible.

I probably could have explained this more clearly ... >_> If that didn't make sense please don't hesitate to say so.

Is it possible for Berserker to come in with Illya if I nerf him down to some Carnival Phantasm level? :P

Really nerfing him down isn't even necessary, but you can do that if you want.

Well, I'd feel bad if he tore up the school one day due to stubbing his toe or something.

In the Netherworld there is always someone stronger. We could put him down and send him to the hospital if need be. But if you want to nerf him, it's A-OK. I'll even let you go back on it, or decide to do it later.

Yes, you'll need to explain him, but don't worry, I do understand that Berserker, while not without some internal drive, isn't complicated.

Unfortunately not! I'd have to put my foot down on this one, the rule against apping closely related characters stands-be they rivals, love interests or family members.

If you want, you can consider playing a quiet character an exercise in saying more with less.

Fem!Revya is superior anyways. :P</small.

Is "student" the default role for characters even if they're not school-aged? Would it be possible to get faculty and/or staff positions?

(This derp would only qualify to be a janitor--a Disgaea Sniper would laugh in his face at his horrifically low stats.)

One more thing: what's the administrative policy on playing multiple characters from the same canon?

Oh hey there. Student is indeed a default role-but all sorts of exceptions exist!

Don't except to be paid for being an exception though, and you'll still have to sleep with the kids.

To use my own characters as an example: I could easily get away with playing someone like say Salvatore the Magnificent along with Rozalin-someone who's canon interactions with her are minimal, not really interesting, or just don't have major importance. Whereas Mir kind of rules out my playing her boyfriend Croix or her arch-rival and best friend Shurelia. Characters like Precure mascots or Servant Berserker have been brought up previously and allowed on the grounds that they are less characters in their own right.

So uhh. I guess we would frown somewhat on Medic and Heavy being done by the same person? :| It's a case-by-case thing.
